Last year LG OLED TVs where among the best in the market, now for 2018, LG has announced the new lineup of OLED TVs with new features and technologies. First of all let’s take a look at the list of announced models:
- SIGNATURE OLED TV W8 4K HDR AI TV
- E8 OLED 4K HDR AI TV
- SUPER UHD 4K HDR AI TV w/ Nano Cell™ Display
The most noteworthy features are:
This new feature allows the TV to receive voice requests employing NLP (Natural Language Processing) to deliver intelligent voice-activated control and connectivity, all this voice features are supported on the backend by LG’s own deep learning technology called DeepThinQ, think of it like the brains behind the remote and TV that enable the voice features (just like Amazon powers Alexa through the cloud).
Users will be able to search for information, images or videos by making a verbal request through the remote control (just like you make requests to Amazon’s Alexa on the FireTV remote). ThinQ also allows your TV to connect to gaming consoles and sound bars.
Example of voice commands that ThinQ will respond to:
- “show me all of the movies this actor has starred in”
- “show me yoga videos.”
- “search for the soundtrack of this movie”
- “turn off the TV when this program is over”
Alpha 9 Processor
This time, LG announced a new processor that will improve image quality like never seen before, quoting from the press release:
LG’s newest α (Alpha) 9 intelligent processor provides true-to-life images with incredibly rich colors, sharpness and depth for greater realism.
The new processor brings technology enhancements in the following areas:
The new Alpha 9 processor will perform image noise reduction using a four-step process, which will improve the clarity of images affected by distracting artifacts and enabling more effective rendering of smooth gradation. Also the processor improves other aspects of the image such as: color, sharpness and contrast.
Color performance is also improved thanks to advanced mapping capabilities, that will allow the colors to be as close as possible to the original content. It also includes an improved color correction algorithm that shows more natural looking colors.
The Alpha 9 processor is also ready to support the next generation content in HFR (High Frame Rate) created at 120 frames per second, specially for high paced content like sports and action movies.
Alpha 7 Processor
In addition to the success of the Alpha 7 processor in 2017, LG has made some improvements to the new line of LG Nano Cell SUPER UHD TVs: SK9500 and SK9000, by combining the Nano Cell, FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) backlighting and the Alpha 7 processor to deliver tech advantages:
- Deeper blacks
- Enhanced image rendering
- Improved shadow details
- Accurate color from wide viewing angles
As a result of all of this improvements, we expect the 2018 line of LG TVs to be very successful. We will just have to wait for the price and availability.
